Project: Pacific Passage
June 2nd - June 23rd
Oahu, Hawaii
On June 2, 2024, after one month of preparing, we set off on a journey to sail 3,000 miles from Oahu, Hawaii to Vancouver Island across the Pacific Ocean, to raise awareness about ocean plastics.
Unfortunately, after three weeks of training out in Hawaii and after several delays, the crossing was called off due to extreme weather conditions. However, this is not the end of our mission to raise awareness about ocean plastics, it just simply means that we need to find a new approach.
We’ve had a lot of people say that “it’s a shame that you went to all of that effort for nothing”, but this isn’t how we’re choosing to see this, in fact we have already raised awareness about ocean plastics having held student engagement sessions, educating people about ocean plastics and what they can do to help combat the issue. We have also created a clothing line that helps combat fast fashion and helps to promote sustainable shopping practices and so much more.
In the short time that we were in Hawaii, we managed to document large amounts of plastic, which reinforced the importance of our mission and allowed us to see the impact that plastic was having on the wildlife and surrounding environment first hand. This is why we believe it is important to continue our mission of raising awareness about ocean plastics.
If you would like to get involved or simply believe in what we are doing, click the link below and become part of the movement. Together we can all combat ocean plastics one wave at a time.
